Trends in Tech & Media:
- 👥 Facebook launched its newsletter product. Please welcome the newest email newsletter platform: FB's Bulletin. But don't get too excited. So far, Bulletin is not available for you or me to use. It's launching with already famous writers like Malcolm Gladwell, Erin Andrews, Mitch Albom, and others "who decidedly aren't extremely political," according to the NYT's Mike Isaac. The big news: Facebook isn't taking any cut of the writers' subscription revenue. From Isaac again: "The two big value propositions Facebook offers should sound familiar: They are taking zero cut of subscription fees, and (as always) they have enormous scale and audience to offer journalists."
- 💻 There's lots to write about the future of work. Quartz co-founder Kevin Delaney (along with a team of media execs) is turning his free, 20,000-subscriber newsletter about the future of work into full-fledged business. The company, Charter, is planning to launch with an events series and sponsorships from companies like Goldman Sachs. The future of work—and the questions surrounding it—are ample fodder for writers, according to AdWeek's Mark Stenberg. Columns about the future of work are popping up across media outlets. Is there room for another newsletter covering this space? That's up to you!
- ❤️ A favor for Newsletter Crew. We're looking to collect data on the state of newsletters. How much are folks really charging per month for paid subscriptions? What's the going rate for a sponsorship? If you want to help out, fill out these anonymous surveys. (One for paid newsletters, and one for ad-supported newsletters.) Thank you!
