Five great cold emails

Hey — Harry again.
Today, it's all about cold emails. We don't talk about them enough. How do you think most startups get their first customers?
Down below are five I like. Take them, improve them, make them yours.

1/ Jason Cohen's “pay for your time” email

February 2010. Jason Cohen launched a new WordPress hosting service. Here's the email he sent to forty WordPress consultants.
To quote Jason: 100% agreed to talk to me on the phone. Not one asked for any money. Thirty agreed to pay $50 / mo.
Today, WP Engine makes $100M / year.

2/ My “pain point” email

Let's say I'd built some podcast recording software. This would be the email I'd send to get my first ten customers. Nice and simple :)
If you'd like to personalise: PS - Get Dr Patel on again. Hilarious episode!

4/ Dave Gerhardt's one-liner

Imagine you're doing cold outreach for an exec coaching program. Here's the email Dave would send the CEO.
The goal is simple. Get a reply. A reply gives you something to work with. How'd you get a reply: Keep it simple. Ask a question.
Much better than a hit and hope template asking for a “quick call”.

4/ My “advice” email

I used to work for a co-working startup. Here's the email I wrote to help get them their first customers.

5/ David Perell's podcast invite email

The lesson — Get specific. It's the specifics that convince people.

One last thing

Cold emails don't have to be work of arts. In fact, they don't even have to be clever.
You have twenty seconds with the prospect in an elevator. What do you say? That's your email.
Be specific. Be personal. Add value. Go away. — Sahil Lavingia

Alright. That's a wrap folks. Let me know how it goes if you use any of these yourself.
Over and out — Harry
